Frequently asked questions

Is this the marketplace?

Nope, not quite. American Health & Life is a broker insurance agency. Our agents team up with various carriers (insurance companies). While some of our carriers participate in the marketplace, we're also certified by CMS to assist with Marketplace policies.

How do I sign up for a policy?

You can sign up over the phone, over Zoom, or even in person if we have an agent in your area. If we do not have an agent in your area the preferred method is over the phone.

What is an insurance broker?

Think of us as your insurance advocates. We're more than experts; we're state-licensed agents operating under stringent government regulations. The severity of penalties, including fines or even jail time, underscores the responsibility we bear. We work with various carriers (insurance companies), ensuring you find the right policy for your lifestyle and needs. Our allegiance is to you – navigating the complexities of insurance while standing firmly on the side of our clients within the bounds of the law.

What is a state-licensed insurance agent?

A state-licensed agent is a professional who is licensed by the state to perform their duties within that state. State-licensed agents are bound by strict government rules that if broken could subject them to fines or even jail time.

What type of insurance agents are there?

In the legal landscape, insurance agents are primarily categorized as either brokers or exclusive agents, each with distinct legal duties and stringent guidelines:

1. Brokers:

  • Independence: Brokers operate independently and are legally permitted to work with multiple insurance companies.
  • Legal Duty: They owe a fiduciary duty to the client, prioritizing the client's best interests.
  • Strict Guidelines: Brokers must adhere to strict industry guidelines and regulations, ensuring transparency and fairness in their dealings.

2. Exclusive or Captive Agents:

  • Affiliation: Exclusive agents represent and sell policies exclusively for one insurance company, bound by a contractual agreement.
  • Legal Duty: They owe a duty to their parent company and, to some extent, to the client. However, their primary allegiance is often to the company that exclusively employs them.
  • Strict Guidelines: Exclusive agents operate within the strict guidelines and contracts set by their affiliated insurance company, ensuring alignment with company policies.

In both cases, legal obligations and guidelines play a crucial role in regulating the conduct of insurance agents. Brokers, due to their independence and ability to work with multiple carriers, often face rigorous standards to maintain transparency and prioritize the client's needs. Exclusive agents, while serving the interests of their affiliated company, must also adhere to strict contractual obligations and guidelines to ensure compliance.
